Shanks set for mid-season Atlantis visit

Check out the latest news from Gateworld -
Thursday - February 21, 2008 | by Darren Sumner

You can't keep a good archaeologist down! Dr. Daniel Jackson will return to the city of the Ancients in Season Five, when actor Michael Shanks makes his second guest appearance on the spin-off series.

Shanks will appear in two episodes -- specifically the mid-season two-parter, according to executive producer Joseph Mallozzi (blog). Story details are still unknown, as are the episode titles.

The two-parter will be written by Atlantis writer-producer Martin Gero.

Shanks's first guest appearance on Atlantis was all the way back in the series premiere, "Rising." Though Daniel found the key to reaching the lost city of the Ancients, he wasn't allowed to join the expedition to actually go there. Only in the Stargate SG-1 episode "The Pegasus Project" did he finally set foot in the city he helped to discover.

Shanks also appears in two SG-1 DVD movies due out this year. Stargate: The Ark of Truth will be in stores March 11 (Amazon.com), followed by Stargate: Continuum (expected in July, but not yet officially announced).

The actor has also recently completed filming a new (currently untitled) movie for The Hallmark Channel, according to Michael Shanks Online. His first Stargate audio book, "Gift of the Gods," will be available in April (story).

Season Five of Stargate Atlantis is now in production in Vancouver, British Columbia, and is expected to premiere later this year. Check out GateWorld's growing episode guide to learn more!

I have always thought that he should have been the one that came to Atlantis and took command of it. To me, he was a more logical choice than Carter, because he can speak and read Ancient, as well as he has several ties to them, which him being ascended twice as well as having -been- Merlin for a couple of episodes.

This makes me happy!

And I'm with Rhyus, he would ahve made a more logical choice. If only it had worked out that way. Sigh.

Re: Shanks set for mid-season Atlantis visit

Just because you have the knowledge skills doesn't mean you can command. Remember, Daniel is a scientist, while Carter is a Scientist AND a Military Officer. Daniel may have ascended twice and showed a lot a brvery throughout the show, but have often was he in charge? No, Carter was the more logical choice. Besides, good leaders don't have to have all the skills themselves, they will surround themselves with people who have the neccessary skills to accomplish the mission.

Re: Shanks set for mid-season Atlantis visit

Yea, and like Weir had the command experience to lead Atlantis through 2 seasons? How about Woolsey? For that fact, Carter did not have much of a command experience either. She was mostly passed over to lead the team when O'Neal got promoted. Hell, Jonas has more command type of experience than Carter, although not with the SGC.

Although, Daniel has shown, in a lot of episodes, that he has the ability to lead the team, even when Jack was around. He has the ability, because of his gift of ancient civilization knowledge, to be able to communicate and interact with many cultures that they ran into with SG-1. He has a sharp mind and one that can think fast when needed to.

I am first and foremost a Jack O'Neil fan. Teal'c and Daniel are second. Carter comes somewhere after that. I prefer Thor, General Hammond, and Jonas over Carter. Never really cared much for her. Just thought that she was thrown in on the team because they needed a pretty face and that they needed a female there as well. Think Jack felt that way in the pilot episode as well.

Re: Shanks set for mid-season Atlantis visit

Haha! Well, to use your words against you, Ken, if leaders don't need to have the skills but the support staff, then Daniel would have been just as good a leader as Sam. In fact, regardless of Sam's military background, I always saw her and Daniel on equal footing because they were the 'brains' of the outfit.

And after 10 years of SG-1, I think Daniel would have done fine.

But obviously, the choice was made more for the writers and actors than for what might make sense in the real world, so we're really just debating 'coulda-shoulda-woulda' here. LOL
